Description of how real GHG reductions will be achieved

Real emission reductions resulting from the technologies described in this protocol will occur as a result the following actions (see figure below):

  • Emission reductions will result from powering application(s) or the entire data centre from zero or low carbon sources of electricity versus powering this equipment using higher carbon-intensive electricity sources. This is inclusive of all equipment that comprise the energy load included in the power-use-effectiveness (PUE) metric (i.e. all of the power entering a data centre)
  • Emission reductions will result from increasing compute efficiency that in turn results in increased energy efficiency per unit of computing services delivered. This can result from processes that include, but are not limited to virtualization, server consolidation and cloud computing
  • Emission reductions will result from technological or process improvements within the data centre that increase end-use efficiency (e.g. use of direct cooling, higher efficiency servers, etc).

List of Greenhouse Gases that will be reduced

As shown in the figure below, the relevant Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) that can be reduced from Green IT processes include those associated with the combustion of fossil fuels to generate electricity as well as emissions occurring upstream (i.e. coal mining) of the project.
