Collaboration with European associate partners, including the EU-funded Mantychore Project (http://www.mantychore.eu/), is actively underway at GSN. This collaboration has three phases, only the first of which will be carried out during the current CANARIE funding of GSN. These phases are described below. The GSN - Europe/Mantychore collaboration is very valuable to both Canada and Europe. In addition to specific project activities, this collaboration facilitates exchange of scientific and technical information on Green ICT, and use of off-grid zero-carbon energy to power networks and datacentres. The GSN - Europe/Mantychore collaboration leverages both projects on both sides to mutual advantage. Mantychore's innovative network resource management solutions may become the basis for future zero-carbon networks, datacentres and clouds. GSN's Canadian protocol for Green IT GHG reduction projects may form the basis for similar European protocols, thereby facilitating participation in the carbon markets by European telecommunications and ICT services industry.

GSN and European Green ICT projects will coevolve in three phases. The first phase is underway now; the second phase will start in late 2011; and the third phase will proceed subject to acquisition of additional funding for both projects. An MoU between GSN and Mantychore has already been signed.

Phase 1: European GSN nodes -- powered by renewable energy -- are integrated into the Canadian GSN network. These nodes will interface to the GSN distributed cloud middleware, and will host Virtual Machines that migrate between Canada and Europe as they follow the wind and sun. This phase will proceed within the current funding.

Phase 2: The European GSN nodes will be reorganized into an independent, self-contained European GSN network, providing a European testbed for powering ICT services with renewable energy. The European GSN network will utilize the Canadian GSN software.

 

Phase 3: Independent GSN networks in Europe and Canada will be federated into a network of networks. GSN and the European partners are seeking joint funding for this phase.
